A February sunset at Cochise, Arizona.

To kiss you goodbye
Under rains that fall
Through dry air
Never to know the earth

As a tear shed
In desert winds
Ne’er to stain the dust
Upon my cheek

A sadness etched upon a heart
To beat among all the others
Unseen
To the passers-by

I watch you slip away
A penance for everything
That hides in shadows
And whispers

The quiet gathers upon each breath
Your glow fading up the valley
There to fall o’er mountains
As the sun

The clouds shall not hear me weep
Nor the night
Nor the rains that die
Before knowing the land

I shall wait in silence
For desert winds to comfort me
And carry your voice
Once again
